Is there a possibility that Lady Gaga could star as the next live-action Harley Quinn?
The music legend announced Thursday that she will star in “Joker: Folie à Deux,” the much awaited follow-up to the 2019 movie “Joker.”
According to Box Office Mojo, the first movie made over $1 billion in international box office receipts and was nominated for 11 Academy Awards, including best picture. The Oscar for best actor went to Joaquin Phoenix for his work in the film.
Phoenix will reprise his role as Arthur Fleck, a lonely loner and unsuccessful comic who was imprisoned for killing his favorite late-night presenter (Robert De Niro) at the conclusion of the first movie. The sequel will once again be directed by Todd Phillips.
The film is scheduled to premiere on October 4, 2024.
Although the “Bad Romance” singer declined to reveal her character, the teaser suggests that she would most likely play the Batman villain, Harley Quinn. Phoenix and Gaga are depicted in silhouettes dancing to brassy renditions of the romance ballad “Cheek to Cheek,” with Gaga sporting the trademark heart tattoo on her cheek.
The term “Folie à Deux” describes a shared mental illness that affects two or more people, fueling fresh rumors that Gaga may play Harley. Harley has been associated with the Joker as an adversarial sidekick, moll, and romantic partner ever since the character was introduced in “Batman: The Animated Series” in the early 1990s. The relationship between them was portrayed on the show as toxic, with Joker frequently abusing Harley, as would later be seen in comic books, movies, and video games.
Despite being a longtime favorite among comic book readers, Harley only became more well-known after Margot Robbie played the role in three Warner Bros. movies: “Suicide Squad” (2016), “Birds of Prey” (2010), and “The Suicide Squad” (2021). The third season of “Harley Quinn,” an animated series on HBO Max, debuted on July 28. Kaley Cuoco provides the voice for the character.
Lady Gaga was nominated for best actress for her work in the movie and won an Oscar for her song in “A Star is Born,” but Renée Zellweger won the award for her performance in “Judy.” Many reviewers referred to Gaga’s lack of an Oscar nomination for her portrayal of Patrizia Reggiani in the 2021 film “House of Gucci” as a snub for the actress.
Who is Lady Gaga?
Lady Gaga is the stage name of Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, an American actress, singer, and songwriter. She is renowned for her musical variety and image makeovers. When Gaga was a teenager, she started performing by singing at open-mic events and acting in school productions.
Before leaving school to pursue a career in music, she attended Collaborative Arts Project 21 through New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. She worked as a songwriter for Sony/ATV Music Publishing when Def Jam Recordings terminated her contract. In 2007, she inked a combined agreement with Interscope Records and Akon’s label, KonLive Distribution. The Fame, Gaga’s debut studio album, which featured the top-charting singles “Just Dance” and “Poker Face,” helped her gain notoriety the following year. The EP, The Fame Monster (2009), which produced the hit singles “Bad Romance,” “Telephone,” and “Alejandro,” was eventually included in a reissue of the album.
