Goodyear to Recall 173,000 G159 Tires After NHTSA Gave Demands

Tire manufacturer Goodyear announced a recall on its 173,000 G159 tires utilized for recreational cars due to the prospective chaotic tread separations and following US auto safety regulators formally calling them out.

In 2017, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) investigated a possible recall of tires that could cause crashes resulting in deaths and injuries.

The agency has called for Goodyear to withdraw their tires, and it seems that they first rejected this request before finally complying with NHTSA’s demands.

In its filing, Goodyear stated that it had recently approved the recall “to address concerns that some of these tires may still be in the marketplace or in use.” 

Goodyear, in a statement on Tuesday, proposed “there is no safety defect” in the withdrawn tires and stated some, if any, are still on the road. The tire company stated that it would withdraw the tires, made in 2003, “to address the risks shown to occur when the tire is used in an underinflated or overloaded condition” on motor homes. 

NHTSA encouraged owners to make sure withdrawn tires are not being utilized. However, the agency states that it believes “due to the unique circumstances of recreational vehicle use, there may still be subject tires on the road today.” 

These Goodyear G150 tires have been getting a lot of complaints from customers about them being defective, two of which claim it caused crashes, stated NHTSA.

In a February letter posted on Tuesday, NHTSA stated that claimed G159 tire failures were “at the center of 41 lawsuits involving 98 deaths and injuries filed between 1999 and 2016.” 

The agency, in its recall demand letter, further stated that “it appears that Goodyear was aware of a safety defect… as early 2002 while the tires were in production but did not file a recall.” 

The court orders obtained by Goodyear precluded the company from publicly releasing information found in lawsuits, said NHTSA. 

“As late as 2015, Goodyear continued to object to requests that information be released to NHTSA despite the limited degree of competitive harm that could follow from the disclosure of confidential business information about a 19-year-old tire design,” NHTSA revealed. 

The recall covers G159 tires size 275/70R22.5.
